A brief legal saga surrounding Remedy Entertainment’s logo appears to have concluded peacefully. Following Take-Two Interactive’s opposition to the Finnish developer’s redesigned “R” logo last year, Remedy has confirmed an amicable resolution to the trademark dispute.
In a statement provided to Eurogamer, Remedy declared the matter definitively settled, attributing the initial filing to “a discussion between our teams that was resolved entirely and amicably late last year.” The reason that the lawsuit stayed was apparently because of the holidays. Holiday scheduling delays for the public filing kept it from being taken down.
We previously reported on the dispute over Remedy’s unveiling of its new logo in April 2023. While intended to signify the company’s evolution beyond the Max Payne era, Take-Two expressed concerns about potential confusion with Rockstar Games’ logo due to similarities in the stylized “R” design. Take-Two subsequently opposed two trademark claims filed by Remedy for the logo variations.
Despite the initial concerns, Remedy and Take-Two maintain an ongoing partnership. They collaborated on the original Max Payne titles and are currently working together on upcoming remakes of the franchise. This amicable resolution paves the way for their continued collaboration without legal hurdles.
With the matter settled it seems like there’s nothing to worry about. It was definitely strange for Take-Two to sue Remedy when the two were working on Max Payne. That’d make for a strange working relationship. However, it seems like all of this was settled a long time ago, and this won’t hurt future partnerships.
It is still disturbing that Rockstar’s parent company is quick to jump on anyone using “R” in their logo. They do not own the letter, and this kind of behavior shows that they are acting as if no one can use an “R” in theirs. We’ll have to see where this leads, but eventually, it will cause a lot of issues that won’t be handled through a settlement.
