The Yakuza series, now Like a Dragon, has recently seen a large boost in fame recently, allowing new players from all across the world to meet the famous characters. That may not matter though, as RGG stated in a recent interview that the developers currently have no plans to bring back female characters like Sayama Kaoru.

This information comes from a One More Game interview with RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama and the Yakuza Series Chief Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto.

When asked about a quote where Kiryu comments on how he once proposed to someone, Yokoyama states, “It’s not a bail-out to bring back previous female characters like everyone is expecting Sayama Kaoru or other popular female characters, there’s no plan for that.”

A screenshot from an interview where the interviewer asks about a proposal dialogue in the last game and if that means a female character will return, to which RGG replied, "With the mention of the proposal, it was very lighthearted and there wasn’t much depth to the answer. He just wanted to go with the flow of the conversation and said “Hey I proposed before” without thinking too much about it. There won’t be further talk about the background of that conversation because it was mainly just out of fun. It’s not a bail-out to bring back previous female characters like everyone is expecting Sayama Kaoru or other popular female characters, there’s no plan for that. The purpose of the scene is to showcase the interactions between Kasuga and Kiryu and to emphasize that they are growing closer and closer."

The specific example that Yokoyama gives is that of the special agent from Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 3, Sayama Kaoru. This character is likely mentioned due to the previous speculation that she and Kiryu were romantically involved at some point, which RGG neither confirms nor denies. Instead, they just state that it was one of the comments that they thought was funny and not something they’ll expand on.

With confirmation that the next Yakuza game will take part in America, at least partially, it provides plenty of opportunities for Kiryu and Ichiban to meet all kinds of interesting new people. It seems that RGG wants to move forward in hopes of finding something new as opposed to dragging out old characters just for the sake of nostalgia.
