Facepunch Studios has released its January update post for Rust, recapping 2023 and revealing a packed roadmap for the year ahead. 2023 saw major additions like the Industrial system, Drones, and M4 shotgun, and the team announced that the pets update has been put on hold indefinitely, with resources being directed towards other priorities.
The news post acknowledges the community’s interest in pets, noting that Facepunch had been working on the feature for several months. However, the developers encountered several obstacles and ultimately decided that the project needed re-evaluation. They said that the update would not be coming this year.
Facepunch said one major challenge was improving the game’s AI to handle pet behavior effectively. The team is currently hiring a dedicated game AI programmer to address this issue and lay the groundwork for future pet development.
In the meantime, Facepunch is focusing on a variety of other updates and improvements for Rust. This includes ongoing performance optimizations, addressing server stability issues, and refining existing features like gunplay and monument design. Additionally, the team is exploring new features such as motorcycles, a revamped server listing UI, and improved underwater exploration.
Looking towards 2024, players can expect consistent monthly updates as usual, kicking off with backpacks in February. These craftable additions will boost carrying capacity, and a public test on the Staging Branch is available next week. Shelter placement limits are also coming next month. The ambitious Nexus project, allowing server-to-server travel and potentially massive player interactions, is planned for release when ready in 2024.
Finally, Nighttime visibility is also being re-evaluated, aiming for improved navigation while retaining the strategic value of darkness. There were many updates mentioned, including the promise that they’re also looking into anti-cheat, but those above are the bigger ones that the community called for. It looks like we won’t see anything huge coming this year, but maybe the new AI developer will surprise us. We’ll have to wait and see.
