Sea of Thieves, the hit open-world pirate adventure developed by Rare, has revealed more details about the new story-driven live event, “The Hoarder’s Hunt,” ahead of its launch next week.
The Hoarder’s Hunt is the second Sea of Thieves Mystery, offering players the task of solving a mysterious set of clues from an elusive puppet master known as ‘H’. The Hoarder’s Hunt combines exciting out-of-game puzzles and in-game Voyages. The first player to complete this treasure hunt receives a one-of-a-kind reward of a replica Gold Hoarder skull, with additional real-world prizes available for crew members and runners-up. In a new trailer, developers at Rare go into detail about the challenges and rewards awaiting all players who will take part in the upcoming The Hoarder’s Hunt.
Inspired by real-world treasure hunts and pop culture classics such as Ready Player One, The Hoarder’s Hunt features a slightly different format from the first Sea of Thieves Mystery, Who Killed DeMarco? It unfolded over the course of four months using a variety of social media mechanisms, ARG elements, and in-game clues, with each step unlocking dynamically as players hit key milestones.
To participate in the upcoming The Hoarder’s Hunt, players must head to the Mystery page of the Sea of Thieves website, opt-in by signing up, and then they will be able to see the first clue. There will be four Stages in total: Skin of Gold, A Feathered Fortune, Portrait of Plunder, and The Crowning Glory. Each Stage consists of an ARG clue hunt and an in-game Voyage. The Voyage entitlement will need to be unlocked by a successful keyword each time.
Pirates who have completed all of the previous stages of the game will advance to the final stage, which features a high-stakes race to win a special in-game golden key. This key is necessary to complete the Mystery, and the headline reward will be given to the first qualified pirate to propose and successfully complete the last Voyage.
The Hoarder’s Hunt will take place over a period of four weeks. Stage One will kick off on Thursday, May 11th.
