SEGA of Europe has undergone a significant shift in its leadership structure, marking a new chapter for the publisher. Jurgen Post, who served as president and COO from 2012 to 2017, has returned to the company, assuming the dual roles of COO of West Studios and regional managing director. This follows a successful stint at Tencent and his recent tenure as CEO of Miniclip.
As found by GamesIndustry, Post’s return coincides with the departure of two long-standing executives. President and CEO Gary Dale, who joined SEGA in 2018, is stepping down from his position. Additionally, chief studios officer Tim Heaton, who first joined the company in 2009 and held various leadership roles, is also departing. SEGA expressed gratitude to Dale and Heaton for their contributions, wishing them well in their future endeavors.
These leadership changes come amidst a period of transition for SEGA of Europe. Recent months have seen internal adjustments, including layoffs at Creative Assembly and canceling the upcoming multiplayer title Hyenas. The publisher cited “lower profitability of the European region” as the reason for these actions.
Hyenas and other unannounced games were canceled late in 2023, and Creative Assembly was forced to lay off employees. During the Game Awards, Sega announced they would revive classic IPs such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Shinobi as remakes. Sega Europe’s ability to turn things around will be interesting to watch.
Post’s return, with his experience both within SEGA and at other major players in the gaming industry, suggests a potential shift in strategy for the European arm of the company. The specific direction and impact of these changes remain to be seen. Still, they undeniably signify a turning point for SEGA of Europe as it navigates the evolving landscape of the gaming market.
They brought back a former leader at the same time they lost his replacements, so this is something to watch. Future developments, which will affect SEGA of Europe’s future in the region and beyond, are sure to unfold under Jurgen Post’s guidance.
