SEGA has just dedicated the first month of 2023 to Amplitude Studios, promising “many, many surprises”. Amplitude Studios is best known for their Endless game series and Humankind. If you take the official tweet literally, it’s likely hinting at more sci-fi updates for titles like Endless Space 2 by teasing that 2023 will be “out of this world”:
Humankind, Amplitude Studios’ turn-based strategy game similar to Civilization, should have seen the most of its success when it launched on Steam in 2021. After all, games like Civilization operate best on PC due to their style and mechanics, like the point-and-click nature of the gameplay loop.
However, Humankind has received very mixed reviews, largely due to its technical issues and limited mechanics. Its core strength has been a compelling narrative. The game’s console release date was indefinitely delayed last October, so a new release date is probably in store this month.
The first expansion was still released in November, so there’s hope for the game’s future. The “Together We Rule” expansion, encouraging players to aim for more diplomatic solutions, added a decent amount of content and helped define the game’s personality a bit more.
Until Together We Rule, the game struggled to justify its existence, and felt too much like an inferior Civilization clone for some. After all, Civilization has dominated the genre for a very long time, raising expectations enough to eclipse similar games.
Amplitude Studios also has the Endless series, which generally involves turn-based strategy too. Aside from the fantasy games, there have been two Endless Space titles. The sequel launched in 2017, so a third installment is certainly due if today’s tweet does imply otherworldly news.
Amplitude Studios may be announcing Endless Space 3, more DLC for Humankind, or even an all-new title. You can read more about SEGA’s biggest updates by following our news section!
