Developer Epic Story Interactive is preparing to release their sentai-themed RPG, Rift Rangers, out of early access for a full launch on both Steam and the Epic Game Store on May 24, 2023. The rogue-lite RPG time survival game initially entered early access just over five months ago and has since captivated players with its unique blend of sentai action, retro pixel art, and addictive gameplay.
Rift Rangers puts players in control of a team of sentai heroes tasked with defending Earth from evil forces emerging from a rift in space-time created by The Master Brain. The game’s objective is to survive increasingly challenging waves of inter-dimensional monsters for 20 minutes until the Rangers’ Mega Mecha powers up and defeats the enemies.
Epic Story Interactive, the Canadian indie studio behind Rift Rangers, has a strong background in developing successful mobile games for popular brands like Beyblade, Slugterra, and Ben10. The decision to create and publish original properties on other platforms was a natural progression for the team. Dennis Leong, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Epic Story Interactive, spoke of the game’s captivating reward loop and over-the-top sentai style as key factors in their excitement to bring Rift Rangers to a wider audience.
Drawing inspiration from the sentai sub-genre of Japanese tokusatsu entertainment, Rift Rangers incorporates colorful costumes, comedic monsters, and memorable helmets. The game offers randomized upgrade options with each level, while energy chips collected during playthroughs can be used to purchase permanent upgrades between runs.
Throughout its early access period, the development team utilized player feedback to refine features and content. The upcoming launch will include a variety of updates, unlockables, and new content, such as an additional level, Ranger, enemies, turrets, cutscenes, interface, and game modes.
Rift Rangers’ game features include:
- Rogue-lite gameplay with randomized power-ups and no saves or extra lives
- Permanent team enhancements using energy chips collected during playthroughs
- A three-person team, with a new hero set to join the battle soon, each boasting unique abilities
- A vast array of weapons to create an unstoppable fighting force
- 13 different levels of difficulty, ensuring epic battles against The Master Brain
