Atlus has announced that digital sales for Shin Megami Tensei V and its DLC on the Nintendo Switch eShop will end. Fans have until Thursday, June 13th, 2024, at 23:59 JST (Japan Standard Time) to make any purchases. It feels out of nowhere, but apparently, the company is going all in on removing it.
According to the Atlus website, the standalone version of Shin Megami Tensei V, the Shin Megami Tensei V + DLC Bundle Set, individual DLC packs, and the free “Safety” difficulty level are all being delisted. This includes DLC packs like Jinshura and the Nine Demons Goddess’ Training, Queen’s Kyoto, The Doctor’s First and Last Wish, and the Mitama Kagura packs (Millionaire’s Dance, Dance of Divine Will, Dance of Experience).
Atlus confirmed that players who bought the game can still download it from the Nintendo Switch eShop even after the sale ends. This will clear up any rumors that anything taken down online will no longer be yours. We want to always promote the idea that digital ownership is real ownership.
Don’t worry; this isn’t against the series or anything negative like that. The upcoming launch of Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance, a new addition to the series, may have something to do with it. This enhanced version is scheduled for release on June 14th, 2024, aiming to introduce the Shin Megami Tensei experience to a broader audience.
Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance is also coming to the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Steam. So, we may see similar things happen on those consoles. We think this has a lot to do with the original Shin Megami Tensei V being removed from the eShop.
While the reasons for this delisting have not been officially disclosed, it is clearly leading to speculation about Atlus’s strategic decision to promote the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance. Atlus may be concentrating on the new version to increase sales, which would be a smart strategy.
This new Vengeance edition is just the game but with way more content. It’s like an ultimate edition, so we’d see why you would probably prefer it over the original and why Atlus is pushing that. If anything, it’s not much of a loss since the newer version is arguably better.
