Atlus, the well-known developer of the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, is planning to release an updated version of the highly-praised game Shin Megami Tensei V in 2021. The new release, called Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, is scheduled to launch on June 14th, 2024. This re-release aims to go beyond the usual “deluxe” updates by improving the visuals and making substantial changes and additions to the game’s story and soundtrack.

According to an interview with GS, Vengeance introduces a new storyline, providing an extra 75 hours of gameplay. This new route deviates from the original plot of Shin Megami Tensei V, offering a different narrative experience. It delves into the theme of revenge and offers a fresh perspective on the classic Shin Megami Tensei themes of order and chaos.

The story now includes new villains called the Qadištu, four Goddesses of Vengeance. In addition, a new character named Yoko Hiromine has been added to the main cast as a playable party member. Yoko was originally planned for Shin Megami Tensei V but couldn’t be included in the first release. Her presence is expected to enhance interactions among the human characters and expand the story’s scope.

“The goal is to further the feeling of presence by cooperating with members on the journey, and to allow an easier understanding of their actions. She was conceived as a kind of heroine of chaos to be paired against Tao, and in this work, the setting from that time has been incorporated into the story as much as possible.”

Director Shiego Komori

Beyond the story, Vengeance has some big technical and quality-of-life upgrades. It was first available only on Nintendo Switch, but now it’s coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. This means it will look better and run more smoothly at 60 FPS. The team behind the game has also listened to players and made specific improvements to how the game works.

The audio in Vengeance has been significantly updated, with about 80% of the original game’s soundtrack being reworked. Additionally, roughly 20 new battle themes have been introduced, offering a broader musical range while preserving the dark and captivating atmosphere for which the series is known.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance seems to be more than a simple re-release. They’re going all out with what some would consider to be a huge expansion to the game. It’s a big plus for anyone who wants to play and hasn’t, as well as those who love the game.
