Showgunners, an upcoming turn-based strategy game from developer Artificer and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment, just revealed the first gameplay trailer in a month. The trailer features central characters and how their abilities function in-game, as well as other important mechanics like appeasing the fans.
Last month, Showgunners set a release date for May 2nd, 2023, and changed its name from Homicidal All-Stars. It will only be available on PC via GOG and Steam, but it does support controllers. You can watch today’s new gameplay trailer on the Good Shepherd Entertainment YouTube channel:
Today’s trailer aims for some of the charm of Auralnauts’ Fictional Fight Commentary, which is a clever way to dump exposition about Showgunners’ mechanics.
The variety of powers on display aren’t very inspired, but at least there’s a decent variety. That is particularly important for strategy games to create a genuine sense of freedom. More paths to victory also adds replay value.
The new gameplay trailer also shows off an impressive volume of rewards that players can get for appealing to the in-game fans. There will be both weapons and “utilities”. This makes the most of Showgunners’ theme and improves the density of the game. It gives players something novel to manage, aside from basic survival and action.
That lines up with some of the puzzles revealed today, which play a large role in distinguishing Showgunners from its peers. A careful line has been drawn between puzzles and traps, which have their own personality and should push players to think quickly.
Judging by the end of today’s trailer, it’s clear the devs are aiming for surprise, and the game does have the potential to live up to that. While last month’s teaser was mostly cinematic, it’s a relief to see so much encouraging gameplay.
