The beloved Skate franchise has just released some new footage of their upcoming installment, asking fans to sign up for playtesting with a superbly honest attitude.

You can watch just over a minute of work-in-progress gameplay on Skate’s official YouTube channel:

The Skate franchise made a serious impact on the sports genre, standing alongside classics like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater by adding its own flavor and mechanics. Unfortunately, it’s been a long time since fans received any news about the highly anticipated sequel.

Finally, the devs smartly decided to take an amusing and forthright approach with their latest update, promising fans that they’re “still working on it”. The trailer begins with a disclaimer that the footage is “pre-pre-pre-alpha”, and much of it involves some simple but fun fails.

Longtime fans quickly showered the devs with a lot of praise for their honesty, which can be strangely rare in the gaming industry.

In fact, the trailer specifically mentions that the devs listened to the players directly and built the game accordingly. The screen briefly shows off a dozen fan suggestions, like the beginning of an Honest Trailer.

The footage also teases some interesting mechanics, such as swinging around by your hands, wall running, and mini-games like a Plinko-style drop. The trailer finishes up by inviting gamers to sign up for a playtest, which was also revealed earlier today:

This will be a closed playtest, so fans won’t be able to share anything about the game after checking it out. To keep gameplay smooth, the devs will limit how and when people can play.

Selected players will be able to play early versions of the game, and will be chosen based on “varying factors defined by our goals for testing at that time in development”, according to Skate’s official FAQ page.
