Sonic Dash, the classic endless runner from developer Hardlight and SEGA, has just confirmed that the new Character Card system will be implemented in a new patch on July 13th, 2023. These cards will appear on the track, and players can gradually collect them over time to unlock and upgrade characters.
Sonic Dash originally launched years ago and is available now on mobile devices. In a new tweet posted today, a teaser image lists the full patch notes:
In last month’s Sonic Central showcase, Sonic Dash was confirmed to be joining Netflix as Sonic Prime Dash, celebrating the beginning of the new season. The game may have a simple gameplay loop, but its sheer speed, casual tone and roster continue to win over fans.
The devs have consistently updated Sonic Dash for years, and Character Cards feel like a natural addition. Since Sonic Dash is an endless runner, it thrives on sneaking into your schedule, in short bursts of speed. Pursuing beloved characters is the only real incentive that’s tangible, so it’s a surprise that the game waited so long to incorporate something like this.
The combination of permanence, rarity, event cards, and increased appearance in the late game is a smart approach. Players will be able to continue enjoying shorter runs without losing out on favorite characters. But those who enjoy a deep dive will still be rewarded.
Sonic Dash will certainly benefit from this mechanic, which feels modern and friendlier, especially since monetization has been a problem for the game. The cards also have a great art design, and since different rarity levels seem to add more details and effects, it’ll definitely appeal to CCG enthusiasts.
