Sonic Origins Plus, an upcoming expansion pack for Sonic Origins from Sega, has just been confirmed following a variety of rumors online. It will officially launch on June 23rd, 2023, which will once again celebrate Sonic’s birthday and the anniversary of the franchise.
Sonic Origins Plus will be available on the Nintendo Switch, as well as current and last gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox users. It will feature 12 new Game Gear titles, new playable characters like Amy, and more. You can watch the full announcement trailer on the official Sonic YouTube channel here:
The Game Gear titles are definitely a highlight of the upcoming expansion, and shouldn’t be underestimated. For newer fans who aren’t familiar, the Game Gear was a mobile console that required a lot of batteries and drained them very quickly.
But its Sonic titles also happened to be very unique. The Game Gear version of the original Sonic the Hedgehog even had alternate zones, which were creative and very satisfying in their own right. The Jungle Zone had terrific music, as well as stylish and curved platforming. Basically, this version did the original game justice, and still let you take some of the Genesis levels on the go.
The other highlight is definitely Amy. Seeing actual gameplay of her in the old school titles is undeniably rewarding, especially for longtime fans. Amy has been a fan favorite in countless titles since the classics, so she certainly deserves to take part. Her animations also look smooth and fit right in, as if she had always been in the original releases.
There’s no question that Sonic Origins Plus is going to be worth checking out for Sonic fans. You’ll also be able to get your hands on a reversible Sega Genesis cover and artbook, to really stoke the nostalgia.
