A new series adaptation of the vehicular action classic Twisted Metal, originally developed by Sony and SingleTrac, officially arrives on Peacock on July 27th, 2023.
The Peacock original got a new teaser trailer today, meaning it doesn’t show much footage, but it does create an immediate impression of the tone that fans should expect. You can watch the full teaser on the Sony Pictures Television YouTube channel:
The original Twisted Metal is absolutely a PlayStation classic. It’s filled with attitude, a terrific soundtrack, countless weapons and non-stop action. The gameplay makes the most of a very simple premise, which feels similar to iconic movies like Death Race 2000 and The Road Warrior.
While teasers are intended to be short, today’s footage may still be a little divisive for the fanbase. The entire presentation amounts to a single punchline, with some familiar imagery at the end for obligatory fan service. Although this does hint the series won’t be taking itself too seriously, which is important, it does feel like a bit odd for the first look.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of destroyed environments and a machine gun-equipped car, and the MA rating is made very clear from the beginning of the teaser. So, it does look like the series is determined to provide some degree of actual carnage. It has a fine line to walk between the amusing concepts and legitimate thrills of the boisterous source material.
Video game adaptations have improved a lot lately, but the likes of Need For Speed are still haunting. There’s plenty of style and some fun lore to elaborate on, and Anthony Mackie is charming as ever, so hopefully more trailers will hint at a promising series.
