Nintendo’s hit third-person shooter Splatoon 3 has just officially announced that the new “Fresh Season” will roll out on March 1st, 2023. This closely follows the first wave of the Expansion Pass, which launches on February 28th, 2023. The game’s official Twitter account also elaborated on the Kraken Royale, Krak-On Splat Roller, and .96 Gal Deco in today’s announcement thread:
Letting the beloved Kraken’s return coincide with Inkopolis in the Expansion Pass is a terrific dose of nostalgia. Inkopolis basically took a backseat in the latest sequel, and many players haven’t had the chance to experience the Kraken.
Its sheer size can create a lot of controlled chaos, alongside powerful area control moves. But at least it has gotten a nerf to help balance out just how intense it was in the original Splatoon.
Although some fans may be disappointed, the original version of this special was definitely broken, and its balancing issues were never worked out. Adding more vulnerabilities will demand more strategy, which lines up with modern Splatoon gameplay. Of course, the Krak-On Splat Roller will still include its signature Squid Beakons, and that mobility could easily shake up the meta alongside Kraken.
Today’s reveals open the door to even more fan service in the future of Splatoon 3. Both of the previous games released years ago, and there’s still other content that longtime fans would surely enjoy seeing again.
The .96 Gal Deco is officially returning with the original Splash Wall and Kraken combo, as opposed to the Splashdown special in Splatoon 2. The approach further piles onto the Splatoon callbacks. Although some players are annoyed that newer content probably isn’t in store for a while, there’s no denying that longtime fans are pleased, even if the Kraken has been renamed.
