As the highly anticipated release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor approaches, players may be surprised to learn that the physical copies of the game require a download before they can dive into the action. The box art for the PS5 game features a small print disclaimer stating “download required” above the age rating, indicating that additional data must be installed before players can enjoy the game.
This download requirement may be due to the massive file size of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The PS5 game boasts a total file size of 147GB, which is far larger than the maximum capacity of a Blu-ray disc, which sits at around 100GB. Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind the game, could have opted to include multiple discs to accommodate the game’s size, similar to how The Last of Us: Part II and Final Fantasy 7 Remake shipped on two discs. However, it appears that EA chose to rely on a download instead.
Given the potential size of the data on the disc, it’s possible that players may need to download up to 100GB before they can play the physical version of the game. This requirement might discourage some players, particularly those with slow internet or bandwidth caps, from purchasing the Blu-ray version. Although day one patches are common in the gaming world, rarely does a game necessitate such a large download.
One likely explanation for the additional download is the inclusion of a 4K texture pack. This texture pack could account for a significant portion of the game’s file size, with the base game itself only being around 44GB. It remains to be seen whether this texture pack will be an optional download for players.
The story in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a third-person action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, continues the tale of Cal Kestis five years after the events of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As one of the last surviving Jedi Knights, Cal is pushed to the edge of the galaxy by the Empire and must confront both new and familiar threats. As the galaxy falls further into darkness, Cal must decide how far he is willing to go to protect himself, his crew, and the legacy of the Jedi Order.
With a pre-load date of April 26 and a launch date of April 28, players should prepare for the substantial download that awaits them before they can fully experience the thrilling continuation of Cal Kestis’ journey in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
