Bethesda Game Studios has started giving early access to the Creation Kit, the modding software for its upcoming space RPG, Starfield. Some chosen modders have begun trying out the tools, but there’s no official release date yet. This information was confirmed in an interview with game director Todd Howard during a Kinda Funny Games livestream.

Howard, of course, acknowledged that modding games is a big deal for Bethesda. Anyone who has played a Bethesda game on PC knows how important modding is. Bethesda has observed modders evolving from enthusiasts to professionals and wants to nurture this progress. However, they don’t have a full creation kit for everyone.

He said that some modders currently have a Creation Kit, which the company gave them. This may not be a good version and is likely more of a development kit. If they did have a ready-to-go version of the Creation Kit, they likely would have handed it out already. Still, we’ve got no word on who received it and why they would get it early. We are assuming it’s both to work with and test for a full release.

“Yes, we’ve delivered it to some people, some of our creators for Starfield. You’re gonna hear some information about that soon. I don’t have a date to announce on when its full release is coming, but really, really important to us. Like, our modders out there have been incredible.”

Todd Howard

When questioned about mod support for console versions of Starfield, Howard reassured everyone that they’re focused on that, too. Drawing from Bethesda’s experience with Fallout and Skyrim, the team is working to make console modding easier than before. Although no specific timeline for console mod support was given, players can be reassured that it’s part of the plan.

While there’s no set date for a full Creation Kit release, its presence and Bethesda’s focus on mod support are positive signs for the future. Fans have always enjoyed the extra freedom and creativity that mods bring to Bethesda games, and it seems that Starfield will be no different.
