Starship Troopers: Extermination, an upcoming PvE co-op shooter, has just released a brand-new cinematic trailer with glorious shots of familiar helmets and bugs from the classic IP. According to the description in today’s trailer, developer Offworld Industries will release the game for Early Access on PC sometime in 2023. A release window has not been confirmed.

Starship Troopers remains one of the most beloved cult sci-fi films of all time, a 90’s classic from director Paul Verhoeven, who also directed RoboCop and Total Recall. Verhoeven’s acute sense of humor, compelling action, and stunning ability to naturally infuse his movies with biting commentary have made him an icon.

Like Verhoven’s other 80’s hits, Starship Troopers always remembered to deliver good entertainment and storytelling first and foremost. That’s why its bug shooting action makes it a perfect fit for cooperative PvE gameplay.

The new trailer description adds that the game will support up to 12 players, “three unique classes, defense-building, large-scale battles, and more”.

Developer Offworld Industries has already invested deeply in realistic military shooters, selling their title Squad as something that could “bridge the gap between arcade shooter and military simulation”. This makes them an ideal candidate to adapt Starship Troopers into a game.

Of course, borrowing from the original movie for a game will likely sacrifice the self-aware writing. Ideally, Starship Troopers: Extermination won’t end up like another IP cash-grab. The phrase “defense-building” is concerning, calling to mind various Left 4 Dead clones like World War Z, or even the better ones like Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

However, 12-player lobbies are pretty big for a PvE shooter, especially for co-op. The large-scale battles could offer up some pretty solid chaos. If the game can avoid typical pitfalls like redundant gameplay, the IP is a massive resource for strong thematic and gameplay content.
