The Steam Deck has officially announced that Repair Centers are open, so that users won’t (necessarily) have to resort to self-repairs anymore. The centers will support all services, including those that aren’t covered by warranty if fans are willing to pay a fee. You can review the full statement from Steam Deck’s Twitter feed here:
The news comes as a major relief for fans who have been lucky enough to acquire their Steam Decks already. The Steam Deck has proven to be one of the most in-demand consoles or devices in the industry, but that has also made repairs difficult.
Since May 2022, owners have had to rely on the replacement parts and guides from iFixit. The Steam Deck was “designed to be repairable” according to the iFixit post, and that’s a clever business idea. But fans that are a little younger, or not as tech savvy, have had some trouble. After all, simple repairs aren’t always the solution for certain issues.
The new announcement draws a very careful line between free and paid services, but overall, it’s a terrific step forward. The given examples also indicate the actual depth of support, noting thumbstick recalibration and more.
Fans received the news with unanimous praise, comparing the large gesture to indifferent competitors, and even the reduction of e-waste.
Now, the Steam Deck hasn’t only proven its library of games will be a genuine threat to the competition, but also the customer service. That’s a very rare thing, and truly marks a bright future for the console. Very few companies in the gaming industry, or any other, support this kind of service.
Fans can simply ship their device to the centers, and it will be shipped back. It remains to be seen if the service will actually operate successfully in practice.
