Upcoming action RPG Steelrising has just revealed more about the mechanics and inspiration for their protagonist Aegis, an automaton that was originally designed to be a dancer.
Here’s the official tweet from PlayStation, which briefly shows off some customization options:
Nacon recently turned heads by announcing a sequel to Greedfall, but Spiders is working full steam ahead on marketing Steelrising, which will finally be available September 8th for the PS5.
Aside from the steampunk, alternate history setting, the hero Aegis is arguably the biggest selling point of the game. So, it’s great to hear more about her unique abilities and role, and the devs even discussed their artistic process a bit.
Aegis design details
The devs have cleared up that the hero’s name refers to a shield that Athena used to protect Zeus. This is perfectly in line with the plot, as players will be fighting a revolution.
Meanwhile, the look was inspired by a tourist attraction in Nantes, France that showcases mechanical art, as well as “The Dulcimer Player”, an actual automaton that was built for Marie Antoinette. Lastly, the devs borrowed from mechanical ballerinas, since Aegis was originally a dancer.
Gameplay mechanics breakdown
Steelrising was smart to make Aegis a dancer, because those skills would translate well into the combat required for the plot. It also provides more acrobatic and engaging visuals.
Players will be able to use a variety of weapons, which are all stored inside Aegis’ body. And fans of Halo Infinite or Apex Legends will enjoy that Aegis also has a grapple, which can be used for both traversal and combat.
The official blog post shows off a short clip of Aegis leaping onto far balconies. But the small mention of using it in combat is one of the most exciting promises, as the freedom of movement should invite more creativity.
Players can also expect a fair amount of customization for Aegis. Aside from the basics, such as the face and hair, this also includes the material of her body.
