In a recent interview with PlayStation Blog, the director of Stellar Blade, Kim Hyung Tae, discussed the new action game and its features. He mentioned the “Action Assist” mode, which is designed to help new players get into the game more easily. It’s an interesting feature and probably the future of inclusion in Soulslikes.

Stellar Blade obviously wants to offer a challenge, but the developers recognize that difficulty can deter some players. To address this, the Action Assist system offers help during specific parts of the game. As detailed on PlayStation Blog, this is essentially an easy mode for those who are still learning how to play games like this.

According to Kim, Action Assist can slow down movement in boss battles at crucial moments. This slowdown helps players better spot attack patterns and react. Also, the user interface will prompt parrying and dodging at the right timing to help counter enemy attacks.

“For example, during crucial moments, such as figuring out the boss’s attack pattern for counterattacks, the movement slows down to make it easier to attack. When using a certain UI, the right timing for parrying and dodging will be displayed, making it easier for players to counterattack. This feature makes the game more approachable and enjoyable, even for those who usually steer away from action games. After completing the game, players can also play Hard Mode.”

Kim made it clear that players have the option to turn off this feature if they prefer a more traditional challenge. Action Assist is only available in the game’s Story Mode. This is a good way to focus on players who might be new to the action genre but want to experience the game’s story.

In addition to the customizable difficulty settings, players can now select their preferred level of challenge as they progress through the game. Ramping up the difficulty is also possible for those seeking a more intense experience.

Stellar Blade’s Action Assist is essentially a way to create a more inclusive game. The developers aim to attract a broader audience by providing different difficulty levels and helpful features while still offering a satisfying challenge for core action game players.
