Rocksteady Studios’ upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will serve as a heartfelt tribute to the late Kevin Conroy, the iconic voice of Batman for decades. Game director Axel Rydby, speaking at a recent preview event, acknowledged the emotional impact of Conroy’s passing in 2022 and the team’s desire to honor his legacy.
Thank you to Eurogamer for asking him. Apparently, the game offers multiple nods to Conroy’s contributions. Players will find plaques in the Justice League base dedicated to both Conroy and Arleen Sorkin, the inspiration behind Harley Quinn. Rydby expressed the studio’s collective sadness upon Conroy’s passing and emphasized his profound influence on Batman’s characterization.
Conroy’s posthumous performance in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League marks his final portrayal of Batman. Rydby described Conroy’s performance as “stellar,” and said that he took Batman to “a new place” as an older character. Rocksteady aimed to ensure Conroy enjoyed their direction for the character, finding solace in his expressed satisfaction.
“It was very emotional for all of us in the entire studio, it was so sad when he passed. I think it’s hard to overstate how important he’s been to Batman as a character and the depiction of Batman. We were all really sad when it happened and we wanted it to be as much of a tribute as we could make it in the game.”

There is one thing that I also want to bring up, which Eurogamer did. There’s a lot unknown about Conroy before taking the role of Batman and what helped him gather his voice for the role. His story is a short part of a comic that any fan of Conroy should read and it was released on Reddit. It was released for free by DC after Conroy’s death, but it basically leads up to the role and how he mustered the iconic voice for Batman.
This short story is about his time in Hollywood, and I won’t spoil what was a huge surprise for me. I feel like that is a great tribute to him, and I’m glad Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will give him the respect he’s earned for turning DC into what it is.
We published an article on another tribute that the Nintendo Switch version of the Arkham Trilogy did for Conroy that’s cool to look at too.
