Summer Game Fest recently disclosed via Twitter that the gameplay premiere of Mortal Kombat 1 will unfold live on Thursday, June 8. This long-awaited reveal will be hosted on stage by the creative mind behind Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon, alongside Geoff Keighley. The unveiling is anticipated to showcase a novel Mortal Kombat Universe, revitalized by the Fire God Liu Kang, encompassing an innovative fighting system, game modes, and fatalities.

This evolution of the Mortal Kombat franchise is developed by the award-winning NetherRealm Studios under the auspices of Warner Bros. Games. The reinvented universe, with its reimagined characters, signifies a significant milestone for a video game series that has sold over 80 million units since its inception three decades ago. Mortal Kombat 1 is slated to release on September 19, 2023, across platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The narrative-driven Story Mode by NetherRealm Studios, renowned for defining the genre, makes a comeback with an immersive cinematic narrative. This fresh storyline features unexpected twists on classic rivalries and new backstories for a plethora of legendary fighters, such as Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. Notably, the new Mortal Kombat installment will bring Kameo Fighters into the fray. These unique partner characters can offer assistance during matches, expanding the gameplay potential for players.

Ed Boon, the Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat and Chief Creative Officer at NetherRealm Studios, conveyed his excitement about the new direction for the franchise, featuring an original storyline and a fresh perspective on classic characters. The debut of the Kameo Fighter system, introducing a distinct roster of partner characters, also serves as a pivotal game enhancement to anticipate.
