The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the highly anticipated adaptation of the beloved game franchise, plans to release the world premiere of its final trailer in a new direct on March 9th, 2023.

Fans will be able to tune in on the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel at 9 AM pacific time. While it seems self-evident, Nintendo still carefully warned fans that nothing would be revealed about the games in the franchise:

The new promo image accompanying today’s announcement features a Mario Kart theme, so it’s possible the upcoming trailer will too. Either way, there are some terrific references here, including the infamous blue shell, Rainbow Road, a glider and a bike. It would be great to see some proper kart action.

Super Mario remains one of the most treasured characters in the industry, so expectations have been high, and every released detail of the movie adaptation has been nitpicked.

To be fair, films have been notoriously terrible at adapting video games, frequently casting the lore aside to use the IP in name only. Halo suffered this way, and in fact, Saturday Night Live recently featured a sketch directly addressing a horrible live-action adaptation of Mario Kart. It was admittedly pretty amusing compared to their traditional fare.

For those fans who still have their arms crossed regarding the casting decisions or animation, the final trailer probably won’t change anyone’s mind. But it should still be fun to get another glimpse of the movie, since Nintendo and the studios have been carefully pacing themselves.

One more trailer has an opportunity to reassure skeptics and build hype without causing more division. Meanwhile, the gaming side of things is still going strong, as Mario Kart Tour continues to add new courses and Mario Strikers: Battle League revived the sports series.
