Video game movies have been getting hotter lately, with the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog, Uncharted, and Detective Pikachu. So, there has been some hope that the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie that is being developed with Chris Pratt voicing the character of Mario would be good. Unfortunately, it looks like we’re going to have to wait to find out, because it has been announced that the film will be delayed until April 2023.
The announcement came from Shigeru Miyamoto, Game Director at Nintendo, through the Nintendo Twitter account:
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.
The film was originally scheduled to be released into the United States on December 21st, 2022. No reason was given for the delay, but with everything that is going on in the world, it is not surprising to see it happen. For now, we can expect to see the release sometime in April 2023 and then 45 days afterwards, it will be available to stream on Peacock.
If you are unfamiliar with the movie, here’s a look at the current cast:
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Jack Black as Bowser
- Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
- Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
- Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong
- Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
- Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike
While there has been a live-action Super Mario Bros. film, this one is set to be computer-animated, which is a deviation from the recent successful video game films that have been released in recent years.
