Edmund McMillen, the celebrated indie developer behind titles like Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac, has confirmed discussions with Epic Games regarding a potential collaboration with Fortnite. McMillen is royalty in the Indie scene but is also a huge figure in gaming in general. Arguably, Epic Games would benefit from having his work in their game.
Responding to a fan inquiry on X (formerly known as Twitter), McMillen simply stated, “Yes, we have talked :)” about a Fortnite crossover. The nature and extent of these talks remain unclear, leaving room for speculation about what form such a collaboration might take (thanks Eurogamer!)
Fortnite has a history of partnering with other large and small developers. Collaboration is just that thing that’s associated with Fortnite now. It’s less of its own identity and is now part of a mass identity everyone is in on. Either way, Fortnite succeeds by continually adding collaborations.
The only thing against McMillen’s impressive library of games is that they’re known for their challenging gameplay and often dark humor, starkly contrasting Fortnite’s more lighthearted and accessible tone. However, there is no doubt that plenty in the fanbase have played The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy or know of McMillen from how much of a celebrity he is in the indie scene.
We can’t really say much about what is coming because being in talks with a company can always end with nothing happening. However, we have high hopes. McMillen is a hero to many indie developers and is looked up to by many other game developers. If we could see his work in Fortnite, I would definitely buy it. He’s one of the reasons I went into the gaming industry, too. Let’s hope we see something come of this soon.
