System Shock, a full remake of the 1994 classic of the same name from developer Nightdive Studios and publisher Prime Matter, has just been delayed until May 30th, 2023. Originally expected to launch near the end of this month, no official cause has been revealed.
In a new blog post today, the devs explain that a March release simply turned out to be “just beyond our reach”. Here’s the new release date announcement from the game’s Twitter feed:
While this delay might be disappointing, the wait won’t be too much longer, and another concrete date has been confirmed. As a result, it’s probably due to some simple polishing issues. But the game has had some trouble launching, so hopefully another delay isn’t in store. The open communication about their delay is certainly appreciated, either way.
System Shock has been a reliable brand for decades, even getting a sequel and inspiring other classics like BioShock. The first-person cyberpunk world has tense environments, clever adventure sequences, and intriguing mechanics.
It was genuinely revolutionary overall, so expectations are very high for the remake, which boldly chose not to aim for a simple remaster. Today’s delay was accompanied by a playful blog post which reinforces that players will meet new challenges and enemies.
All of the trailers and footage released thus far, including an extensive demo, do include some gorgeous new visuals. It’s a real treat to see this retro game with newer graphics. Notably, most of these visuals are somewhat consistent with the original game, or at least fit the established world. Ideally, the same kind of elaboration will be successful throughout all of the new content in the remake.
