The long-awaited remake of the 1994 sci-fi game System Shock is finally confirmed to be released around March of this year.
Two months following the September 2015 release of System Shock: Enhanced Edition, Nightdive Studios revealed plans to build a System Shock remake for PC and Xbox One. Nightdive Studios intended to finance the game’s development by launching a Kickstarter campaign in June 2016. Alongside the Kickstarter campaign, the studio provided a free demo including an early version of the game’s first level.
The System Shock Remake Kickstarter campaign ended on July 28, 2016. Nightdive eventually published an alpha demo of the game on GOG and Steam in May 2020, accompanied by a developer’s walkthrough and commentary. The demo featured a new build of the game from previously released demos, but still included voiceover audio which Nightdive had yet to re-record owing to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
After several delays, Nightdive has finally confirmed the launch window of System Shock’s remake in a recent announcement on the System Shock Kickstarter page.
After our return from Gamescom we’ve been hesitant to share anything so as not to spoil any remaining surprises we have in store. However, we’ve picked a few last things to share before our quickly approaching launch window of March, 2023.
While this is not the first time Nightdive has set a tentative launch date, a great deal has occurred over the past several years, especially with the collaboration with Prime Matter and the expansion of the project’s scope and size. It has allowed the developers to focus on enhancements to quality-of-life, bug fixes, and localization assistance. The delays have provided sufficient time to improve certain elements of the game that need further polish.
