During a call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick apparently mentioned their recently acquired Cfx.re community, and the future for it. He supposedly stated that he was happy to see it come to the brand and had big plans for the future. He is also said to have named two big communities, FiveM and RedM, and that he plans on monetizing them in the foreseeable future.
This was claimed in a tweet by Ben (@videotechuk_) on Twitter who is great at finding Rockstar information. For those who don’t know, Take-Two bought Cfx.re in August, and FiveM and RedM are two well-known and large RP communities. They already have a way to make money, so more talk about monetization means it will go much further.
Cfx.re uses Patreon, which is a good way to make money for independent studios. However, it’s not a good way for a major label would make money, as that label could handle subscription fees and everything else itself. If anything, Rockstar is losing potential money by splitting it with Patreon. They should already have moved the RP servers to their own store.
While this sounds normal, it means a lot would change. A lot of the fan-made items and additions would likely no longer be allowed on these servers. These would be official Rockstar servers, so players would likely need to buy new additions and modifications instead of doing their own thing. The company wants to make sure it’s all fair and that they benefit because this is a business at the end of the day.
We’ll need to see what Take-Two will do in the future but it makes a lot of sense that they would want to monetize their content. They likely paid a good deal of money to acquire the RP servers, and they need to end up making that back and profiting.
