The record-breaking launch of ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ has rewritten the history of the Zelda series, with over 10 million units sold worldwide in just three days since its release on May 12. This marks the fastest sale rate in the history of the series. With 4 million copies sold in the Americas alone, this Nintendo Switch game has also set a record as the fastest-selling game for any Nintendo system in this region.

In an enthusiastic statement, Devon Pritchard, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Communications, spoke about players’ enthusiastic return to the world of Hyrule and the excitement surrounding the new mysteries and adventures this game brings. “We’re grateful for all of our fans who’ve shown their passion for The Legend of Zelda over the years, and these sales numbers for the latest installment continue to show the strong momentum for both the franchise and Nintendo Switch this year,” Pritchard said.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom‘ is a direct sequel to ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’. In this game, players are given the liberty to choose their own path through the vast landscapes of Hyrule and the enigmatic islands floating in the immense skies above. The game challenges players with new destinations, dangers, and puzzles, requiring both wits and resourcefulness. It also introduces new abilities for the game’s hero, Link, to combat the evil forces threatening the kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda action-adventure series, which began over 35 years ago with the release of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ game in the U.S. in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, has proven its enduring popularity. As players take on the role of the heroic Link, they are tasked with battling foes and unveiling hidden mysteries in vast fields and dungeons. As of March 2023, the series has sold more than 130 million units globally, demonstrating its sustained success.

‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ is now available for purchase in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch, the My Nintendo Store, and select retailers for a suggested retail price of $69.99.
