A recent report has revealed that a third-person action role-playing game based on the 2020 comic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, is set to launch in a few years.
Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, disclosed in an interview with Polygon that a video game adaptation of TMNT: The Last Ronin is in the works. Similar to the source material, The Last Ronin video game would be a darker and more mature take on the TMNT franchise. In addition, Rosen said that The Last Ronin will be an ambitious AAA title inspired by Sony’s God of War.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, a five-issue miniseries published in 2020, follows the story of a lone surviving Turtle who embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost. The narrative takes place in TMNT universe’s future, in a battle-ravaged New York City. Until the end of the comic, the identity of the lone surviving Ninja Turtle remains a mystery.
As was the case with TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, all four turtles are often playable in TMNT games. Based on the currently available information, it appears that The Last Ronin will focus mostly on a single-player experience. However, Rosen has stated that extra characters may be playable in flashback sequences, similar to how the comic book series is structured, although the core action is said to revolve around the lone surviving Turtle.
The announcement that one of the acclaimed graphic novels in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise will be adapted into a video game has generated a great deal of excitement among fans. The Last Ronin has neither been made into a movie nor a television series, so it will be interesting to see it in a cinematic and immersive form, as most AAA video games strive to provide.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is currently in development at an unnamed studio, and it will likely take a few years before it is released. Nonetheless, Rosen has promised that more details about the upcoming TMNT game will be revealed in the coming months and years.
