Tekken 8 has unveiled its first DLC fighter, bringing back a familiar face to the Iron Fist Tournament. In a recent trailer showcasing the game’s opening cinematic, capoeira master Eddy Gordo was revealed as the first addition to the post-launch roster. Eddy Gordo is a familiar face and my main fighter for Tekken.

Eddy, a fan-favorite Brazilian fighter first introduced in Tekken 3, returns with his signature acrobatic Capoeira style. The trailer highlights the use of motion capture technology to enhance his movements and animations, promising a smoother and more realistic fighting experience. I absolutely love this character because you could beat anybody by button mashing; his moves flowed so well and were very unfair.

While an exact release date remains unconfirmed, Eddy is set to dance his way into Tekken 8 sometime in Spring 2024. He joins three other currently unspecified characters teased for release throughout the year, with text in the trailer suggesting further Season 1 DLC fighters following Eddy in Summer, Fall, and Winter.

This announcement arrives alongside the Tekken 8 opening cinematic, which evokes feelings of its predecessor, Tekken 5, setting the stage for the Mishima family’s epic clash. The base roster for Tekken 8 boasts a mix of new and returning fighters, including popular newcomers like Azucena and Victor Chevalier and iconic names like Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama.

What I want to focus on specifically is motion capture. My degree is in Computer Animation, and I think things like this are the perfect reason to use motion capture. I’ve seen really lazy motion capture where people don’t adjust it afterward, so it looks weird on sets. However, something where the movement is so specific that an animator would probably mess it up is the perfect time to use it.

I am not against motion capture, even though a lot of animators are. I think this is exactly why it’s needed and would only help us. I like seeing Eddy get added in because this is a true-to-form style.
