Tencent Games has just revealed a surprise trailer for an upcoming AAA title called Code: To Jin Yong, which references the prolific wuxia writer.

Here’s the full trailer, which features three minutes of footage with the power of Unreal Engine 5:

The wuxia genre is more recognizable than you might think, thanks to several films in the genre making that universe and style more mainstream. For example, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of the most lauded films of all time, and basically encapsulates the best that wuxia storytelling can offer.

Wuxia involves an ancient world of martial artists with superhuman abilities. There have been hundreds of books, movies and more in the genre. Even the MCU borrowed some inspiration for certain imagery and themes in Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Jin Yong, the writer’s pen name, is one of the most treasured and gifted writers in the wuxia genre, who crafted a larger-than-life world populated by nuanced and interesting characters.

This isn’t the first time Jin Yong’s works have inspired gaming, but it is surprising that the industry hasn’t recognized the potential more often.

Code: To Jin Yong trailer breakdown

The trailer begins by revealing that the game will be powered by Unreal Engine 5, and smartly setting players in an open world.

While many games have come to rely on open worlds in exchange for providing any kind of narrative, Jin Yong’s works really lend themselves to both.

That colorful, exciting world is driven by that kind of wandering freedom, and this should allow the game to explore the many environments that fans will expect. It will also be an opportunity to revisit ancient lands, which the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise is built on.

So far, the demo looks fantastic, and it’s only based on their R&D Engine. The animation is decent, including the combat. Their footwork and general movements are true to character, since everything looks unusually fluid. However, this makes the giant weapon effects feel a little distracting.
