Terra Nil, an upcoming terraforming strategy game from developer Free Lives and publisher Devolver Digital, has just revealed that it will launch on March 28th, 2023. It will be available PC via Steam or GOG, as well as Netflix.
Alongside the new release date trailer, Terra Nil’s official Twitter feed also announced that a portion of their Steam profits will be donated to the Endangered Wildlife Trust:
The thread further elaborated on the Deluxe Edition, which will add the original soundtrack and a digital art book to all pre-orders. The art book will feature a variety of conceptual artwork.
Terra Nil was one of the few highlights from Devolver Digital’s holiday special last December. It already has a strong environmental theme, but it’s a welcome surprise for such a small game to support an actual conservation organization.
Terra Nil has some remarkable sound effects, which effectively create a tactile environment. It’s clear that the devs’ enthusiasm for nature has translated into well-defined details, including the visuals. Terra Nil’s settings are certainly colorful and lush, but they generally have a soft and cool tone. As a result, it balances out a friendly and realistic setting pretty well.
Although Terra Nil appears to be a relaxing game, especially given that meditative soundtrack, it also promises some layered mechanics. The simple and creative premise lends itself to some interesting twists on the classic city builder.
All together, these features prove that a good cause doesn’t have to feel shoehorned, making it much more accessible. Terra Nil looks to be entertaining first and foremost.
It’s ambitious and an interesting departure for developer Free Lives, who is probably best known for Broforce, and probably overlooked for Genital Jousting. It’ll be great to see the devs continue to expand.
