Striking Distance Studio was looking to make a name for itself in a big way with the launch of the AAA horror title The Callisto Protocol this past winter, but the game failed to be considered a commercial success. Now, Senior development staff have taken to announce they’ve been laid off from Striking Distance Studios.
The posts were first noticed by one user on LinkedIn after one dev commented on the situation and another Senior Environment Artist from the studio posted about how they were laid off. The reason isn’t given and there has been no official announcement from Striking Distance Studios about the layoffs so far.
There are many other posts from individuals in the game developer community sharing their sympathies for the developers who were laid off by Striking Distance. This is strange considering that the developer posted that it was hiring for several senior positions two months ago according to a post from the company’s CEO Glen Schofield.
It’s unclear why the company would let go of someone like the Senior World Artist if the developer was looking to hire major talent in adjacent fields like a Senior Technical Artist or a Senior Character Artist. The company has not made a post on LinkedIn since last month when it celebrated the four-year anniversary of the launch of Striking Distance Studios itself.
If something happened to cause these layoffs, we may know more in the coming days. If it’s just a money-saving measure, Striking Distance will likely prefer not to put out any statement letting us know how many were let go.
