The Case of the Golden Idol, a narrative-driven detective game, is set in an alternate 18th-century England. The game engages players in the investigation of 11 unusual and unsettling deaths over a period of forty years. These seemingly disconnected tragedies weave a broader mystery that players must decipher.

The game unfolds through meticulously designed snapshot scenes, each encapsulating a point in time of the ongoing narrative. Players are free to probe these scenes, piecing together the events’ chronology, motives, and suspects. Deductions are recorded in an interactive notepad, which provides feedback on the accuracy of the player’s theories.

In transitioning The Case of the Golden Idol to the Switch platform, the user interface has been revamped. This redesign ensures an optimal gaming experience, whether the Switch is being used in handheld or docked mode.

“The Spider of Lanka,” the game’s downloadable content, expands the game’s depth with three novel scenarios, presenting additional conundrums for players to solve. This DLC precedes the events of The Case of the Golden Idol, beginning in 1741.
