Deconstructeam has crafted something very ambitious and psychedelic with The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. It feels both tranquil and tragic, with mesmerizing pixel art and music that have a very distinct artistic vision.

As a story-driven experience, the game’s themes could easily get caught up in their own profundity. But today’s trailer appears to balance out the cosmic scale and sweeping emotion with remarkable sincerity. Its content also subverts some of the more familiar tropes in the genre.

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood might seem a little intimidating for newcomers to the genre, investing in something so gloomy. But there’s no denying the sheer intrigue of its striking visuals.

The divination card mechanics are also quite clever. Narratives are often built on player decisions, and giving players influence over the story through card crafting is a novel approach. Although the trailer was busy creating a moody tone, the game’s official Steam page notes that cards can be built from “hundreds of possibilities”, which would be an impressive flexibility for the genre.

Devolver Digital has continued to expand lately, acquiring new studios like doinksoft. Deconstructeam has released other successful narrative games, namely the cyberpunk hit The Red Strings Club.
