According to a new tweet from developer Naughty Dog, The Last of Us franchise is going to have a new special that unites the game and show creators, as well as the cast.
Sony will host the Creator to Creator special, and although a concrete release date was not confirmed today, it’s still “coming soon”. Here’s the big announcement from Naughty Dog’s feed, which includes a brief teaser that appears to feature the interview room:
It’s undeniable that The Last of Us has always been a phenomenon, but it’s rare for success in the gaming industry to translate so well into other mediums. Many times, IP is abused for its namesake, and the mythology or characters are butchered for the sake of “mainstream” appeal.
But The Last of Us series from HBO has both accurately represented the characters and world of the game, while elaborating on certain themes and concepts in fair and interesting ways.
The show creators have clearly made the most of the source material’s drama, humor, lore and terror. Even when the show experiments with episodes like Long, Long Time, which is arguably one of the most equally touching and heartbreaking episodes of any series, the creators excel in those lanes.
This has made The Last of Us one of the few successful video game adaptations period, and the path to that success will be absolutely compelling. Any kind of insight could be useful for other potential adaptations. There could also be hints about plans for the franchise’s future.
The star power of the cast should also help bring in some audiences that would otherwise ignore little behind-the-scenes specials like this. Hopefully, much like the HBO series, Sony’s upcoming special will encourage new audiences to rethink gaming and also join the Last of Us fandom.
