The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo’s next installment in the hit RPG series, has just revealed the in-depth showcase that was announced yesterday. It features over ten minutes of gameplay, including a look at the new Hyrule, map traversal and Sky Islands, and more abilities for Link. You can watch the full gameplay reveal on the Nintendo YouTube Channel:
The first highlight of today’s gameplay reveal was “Recall”, Link’s new ability to rewind an object’s movement. Although this was explained to show how players can use fallen objects to reach Sky Islands, there is a lot more potential in this mechanic.
Blinx fans will remember how large of a role that rewinding objects can play in solving puzzles or progressing. It’ll be a fascinating new way to create momentum, alter environments, or move around.
Next up was “Fuse”, a strange new ability for Link to combine objects. This seems a little more amusing than anything else, but it does add more pliability. It’s basically weapon stacking, which gives players more combat flexibility.
Similarly, “Ultrahand” will allow Link to rearrange existing objects. All of these abilities seem to be aiming for a remarkable level of freedom, and they also add more significance to Link’s surroundings. “Ascend” will even let Link pass through some ceilings.
These mechanics feel very well thought out, and creatively give the player more interaction with the world. And that always improves the sense of immersion, which was a big part of what made Breath of the Wild so entertaining.
The best thing that today’s gameplay achieved was distinguishing itself from Breath of the Wild, while keeping all of the mechanics that worked.
