The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an upcoming narrative adventure from developer Daedalic Entertainment and publisher Nacon, has released its first dev diary today. A release window has not been confirmed, but it’s expected to launch this year for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. Here’s the full dev diary, which is a brief making of video:
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been somewhat divisive, though mainly for the premise itself, or the admittedly odd art design for Gollum.
But fans of the IP will undoubtedly be curious nonetheless, as J.R.R. Tolkien is an undisputed literary master. Tolkien’s expansive imagination and flair for language are both supremely entertaining and fascinating.
Along with the remarkable success of the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy, and even Rings of Power, the fanbase will be happy to explore any square inch of Middle-earth.
Although some gamers will be frustrated and see this game as a missed opportunity, Gollum is a central character with plenty of intrigue. Today’s dev diary reinforces how personal of a story this will be. That kind of approach has the potential to be equally enriching or disappointing. But it certainly goes against expectations, especially compared to previous gaming adventures in the IP.
And while it seems the devs paid close attention to the source material, around half of this video is about how they expanded the lore. So, as long as they can capture the spirit of Tolkien’s world, the story shouldn’t annoy familiar fans with too many inconsistencies.
Most of the game’s official Steam page relishes the players’ opportunity to engage in Gollum’s famous internal conflict. Today’s dev diary was fairly insightful, but there still aren’t enough details about the gameplay itself, which is largely going to determine fan interest.
