The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an upcoming adventure and stealth game from developer Daedalic Entertainment and publisher Nacon, has released about twenty minutes of gameplay. The showcase was also accompanied by a lengthy Q&A session.
Previously expected in June due to a leak, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is now officially slated to launch on May 25th, 2023. It will be available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, though a Nintendo Switch port is expected later this year. You can watch the full gameplay showcase on the Nacon YouTube channel here:
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, like all Middle-earth adaptations, has considerable expectations to bear and will be very divisive for the fanbase. It’s also important to note that the footage is from a Beta version.
The art design seems to be equal parts questionable and fair. Some of the nature and its elements have some decent textures to them. But many of the characters, objects, and architecture don’t quite capture the corresponding personalities that were expected.
There is a softness to this troubled age of Middle-earth. And some things that deserve majesty, or a defined sense of history, feel overlooked. There may have been too much concern about how friendly this game should be. But there are still many details that do feel carefully thought out. It seems the devs put a lot of effort into a vision that some fans will simply disagree with.
The emphasis on stealth is appreciated, and Gollum’s movement is translated pretty well. And very little of the story was revealed today, for a game that appears to be aiming for players to be caught in the middle of Gollum’s psychological tug-of-war.
It’s a strong premise, but it may have been beneficial for the devs to wait and show gameplay that was more polished, or character driven.
