Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is free on Epic Games Store for today. It’s one of the best games of 2021, but thanks to Marvel’s Avengers, people started assuming games from Square Enix were cash grabs. Guardians of the Galaxy did not offer microtransactions and just had a great story and gameplay, but it couldn’t shake the Avengers-level hate.
Now that Guardians of the Galaxy is free on Epic Games Store, we suggest going for it as soon as you can. It will really be worth being a Game of the Year contender, and it’s hard to find people who hated it that actually played. The issue was that Square Enix published this game and Marvel’s Avengers, so people thought this would have the same live-service aspects. You have until January 11, 2024 to grab this game for free.
For those who haven’t played it, the Guardians, in their usual money-making mayhem, stumble upon a cosmic artifact while nabbing a critter for a collector. This kicks off a galactic chain reaction, pitting them against an ancient, power-hungry god and a ruthless galactic militia determined to maintain order, even if it means crushing dissent. As Star-Lord, you lead the Guardians, blasting through vibrant alien planets, hilarious dialogue exchanges, and intense third-person shootouts.
Choices matter, impacting relationships with your eccentric companions like the stoic Drax, the lethal Gamora, the tech-savvy Rocket, and the ever-evolving Groot. You command their combat abilities, unleashing elemental blasts, rocket barrages, and Groot’s fury. Quick-time events spice up combat, letting you intervene with witty banter or timely actions. Between explosive battles, exploring quirky hubs, hunting for collectibles, and uncovering the Guardians’ hidden pasts, forging a ragtag team into reluctant heroes ready to face the universe’s biggest crisis.
It’s one of my favorite games. I played it in a few days because the story was so good, and the gameplay was so much fun. Unfortunately, a lot of people judged this one by its cover, and it really should have done a lot better than it did.
