The celebrated Street Fighter series has reached a significant milestone, selling more than 50 million copies worldwide. This announcement, confirmed via the official Street Fighter Twitter account, comes on the heels of the news that the latest addition to the franchise, Street Fighter 6, has already been played by over a million gamers.

Born from the creative minds at Capcom, Street Fighter is a Japanese media franchise grounded in a collection of video and arcade fighting games. The franchise made its debut in 1987, and since then, has expanded its universe through mainline games, a multitude of spin-offs, crossovers, and appearances across different media. The series has become an iconic figure in the gaming world, with its 1991 release, Street Fighter II, which is responsible for setting many conventions within the one-on-one fighting genre.

Considered one of Capcom’s flagship franchises, Street Fighter is among the highest-grossing video game series of all time. As of September 2022, it reported total sales of 49 million units globally, a testament to the franchise’s enduring appeal. Moreover, with a staggering gross of US$12.2 billion, including 500,000 arcade units, Street Fighter holds the crown as the highest-grossing fighting game media franchise ever.

In June 2023, Capcom introduced the newest primary entry in the Street Fighter franchise, Street Fighter 6. The game was made available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, with an arcade version by Taito set for release later in the year.

Street Fighter 6 has retained the essence of its roots while adding fresh elements to keep gamers engaged. It consists of three overarching game modes: Fighting Ground, World Tour, and Battle Hub. In Fighting Ground, players can engage in local and online versus battles, train in a dedicated mode, or embark on arcade adventures. World Tour is a solo player story mode, which has the player avatar navigating through 3D environments in an action-adventure format. Battle Hub serves as an online lobby mode, allowing gamers to compete in casual or ranked matches, participate in special events, or play emulated Capcom arcade titles.

One of the key enhancements in Street Fighter 6 is the Drive Gauge, designed to foster player creativity. This new system allows players to choose from five different techniques, encouraging them to strategize and prioritize their moves. The Drive Gauge mechanics are influenced by features from previous Street Fighter games, such as Parry, Focus Attack, and EX move. The game also introduces three control types – the “classic”, the “modern”, and the “dynamic”, offering players a variety of game control options.
