CD Projekt Red announced on The Witcher X account (formally known as Twitter) that they would release a mod editor. The editor is going to be completely free for everyone who owns a copy of the game and will be exclusive to PC users.
As announced on X, you can create your own experiences in the game by creating a completely new quest or editing an existing one. The release is planned for 2024 but without a set window in that year. It will be free for anyone who owns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and is pretty exciting news for fans who want to bring more content to the game.
When asked if consoles would also get this mod editor, the Twitter account responded that it would be “PC only.” PCs are the only platform that will give enough power and freedom to create and edit mods. There are games that allow you to have game engine capability, like Dreams, Grounded, or Little Big Planet. So I’d say if you’re interested in making games and mods on console, go to those.
As for the modding tools, it is likely that we’ll see an editor similar to many other games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance or GECK for Fallout. This would be where the developers allow you to use tools that they used to make the game, so you can adjust and modify it. This stuff is great to use and I encourage everyone to try it out.
The Dragon Age Toolset was what showed me that anyone could be a game designer or animator, and I imagine that fans of The Witcher will benefit from the same opportunities. This is very exciting and if I had the time, I definitely would try and create something fun in The Witcher 3 modding kit when it releases.
For those of you who always wanted the opportunity, there’s no better time than when this releases.
