The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will finally get a next-gen update next month, which will be free for all fans who currently own the game. The update will be available on December 14th, 2022. Developer and publisher CD Projekt Red also teased that more details and actual gameplay will arrive next week, on their official Twitch channel:

In addition to next-gen consoles, CD Projekt Red confirmed that the update will support PC as well, and that it should update automatically.

This prompted PC fans of the game to question how this update will impact performance and mods. After all, replacing the original version could be difficult for some computers. PC components can only support so much, and it could require players to invest in better specs for the game, just like investing in a next-gen console. Ideally, fans will be able to roll back.

For now, it’s unclear what kind of changes the update will make, or what features could be added. However, this should be addressed directly in next week’s “REDstream”. Since it’s set to include actual gameplay, fans will certainly get a good look at some of the visual improvements.

Either way, the next-gen update is free, which is very generous and certainly no guarantee in this industry. Consider how much the Miles Morales PC port is going to cost you when it releases this Friday.

Today’s big news comes shortly after the original Witcher game announced a full rebuild in Unreal Engine 5, back in October. The remake has been developed alongside Polish studio Fool’s Theory. The Witcher fans were also recently treated to the announcement of a big crossover with Lost Ark, the acclaimed MMORPG.
