CD Projekt Red recently announced they have put a lot more staff to work on The Witcher 4, codenamed Polaris. They mentioned in an earnings conference that VGC listened in on that the majority of their staff are now focused on developing this new installment in the popular fantasy RPG series. This is great news for anyone excited for the next game.

As stated at the conference, this marks a significant step forward for the project. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has confirmed that the Polaris development team has now grown to over 400 developers, as previously targeted. The official schedule has set the full production phase to begin in the second half of 2024. CD Projekt Red’s biggest team previously worked on Cyberpunk 2077. With the upcoming release of the expansion Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the team dedicated to that project has been notably reduced. It’s likely that these developers have moved on to work on other projects, with Polaris being the main focus.

“The Polaris team, on the other hand, has grown to over 400 developers. reaching its target size for entering the production phase. This is scheduled for the second half of the year.”

The next installment in The Witcher series, often informally called “The Witcher 4” but officially known as Polaris, begins a new trilogy in The Witcher universe. CD Projekt Red finished its research phase for Polaris last year and is now entering the full development phase.

The latest news also gave updates on other projects at CD Projekt Red. The Witcher spin-off, Project Sirius, is still being worked on at The Molasses Flood studio. The team size for Project Sirius has stayed the same at around 40 staff members since the last update.

The focus on Polaris shows where CD Projekt Red is heading. This next game will probably be far bigger than The Witcher 3. With a big part of the studio’s resources going into the project, The Witcher 4 seems like a top priority for the company. While an official release date for Polaris has not been announced yet, the latest update shows that it will be a while until we even hear of a release date. The full production phase is set to begin later this year, so we’d expect some news next year.
