CD Projekt Red has revealed that they will be working with Polish studio Fool’s Theory on a remake of The Witcher, rebuilding everything “from the ground up” in Unreal Engine 5. It was previously planned under the codename “Canis Majoris”, and no further details about the game itself have been confirmed. Here’s the big news from The Witcher’s Twitter feed:

The Witcher continues to be one of the most beloved fantasy franchises, including the written source material, original games, and recent television adaptation. Boasting a strong hook, memorable characters, and a potent setting, this series definitely deserves a remake.

The fact that CD Projekt Red has dedicated a full rebuild should be very promising for fans, since the process will demand an extraordinary amount of effort.

The original game released in 2007, and technology has advanced exponentially since then, so it will be an entirely fresh experience. This will prove to younger gamers why the series is such a fan favorite, since the latest entry was simply an augmented reality mobile game. The mythology is arguably the highlight of the series, while its mechanics have been a little mixed.

On top of the remake news, a follow-up tweet responded to a fan question and added that The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt will join next-gen consoles “soon”:

The Witcher 3 was the highly praised conclusion of the core series, and released back in 2015. Promptly following the devs’ response, fans have speculated that a trailer for the next-gen release could be expected at this year’s Game Awards. The Game Awards 2022 are scheduled to stream live on December 8th, 2022, from an in-person event at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater:

CD Projekt Red has reassured fans that they will have “full creative supervision”, and that their partner in the remake, Fool’s Theory, includes veteran staff members from The Witcher series.
