Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, recently spoke with Game Informer about the upcoming video game adaptation of the comic series TMNT: The Last Ronin. The Last Ronin is one of the most popular comics for TMNT and is probably the story to make a game about since so many people have heard about it.

The Last Ronin comic is a dark and gritty story set in a dystopian future where all but one of the Turtles are presumed dead. We won’t ruin who it is, but I recommend looking into it if you don’t know. It achieved unexpected success, attracting both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise. This success led Paramount, the current owner of the TMNT property, to seek ways to expand on the story. They also had to find a way to avoid conflict with the upcoming animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is geared toward a younger audience.

In an interview with Game Informer, Eastman gave some details on it. A video game adaptation was seen as the ideal solution, allowing the developers to capture the mature tone and themes of the comic. Black Forest Games is developing the game, slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While a release window has not been announced, Eastman expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that the visuals he has seen are impressive and faithful to the source material.

Eastman, who was involved in some of the earlier TMNT video games considered among the franchise’s best, is also working with the developers on this new title. He highlighted the excitement among fans of the comic, particularly those who appreciate a more mature take on the characters.

“Everything I’ve seen – we’ve been interacting with the development crew – and it looks like some of the sets and characters have walked right off the pages of the comic. So beautiful. So fantastic. And so pretty much every fan of Last Ronin that I’ve talked to is really, seriously pumped, like, ‘We get to have an older version of the Turtles just for us as a video game!’

It looks like this video game is only the first step in making an expanded universe for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I hope we’ll see newer ones soon because it is time for the turtles to pass down their bandanas.
