Total War: PHARAOH, the next installment in the hit grand strategy franchise from Creative Assembly and SEGA, has released around fifteen full minutes of gameplay footage centered on Ramesses. The showcase was teased yesterday with a cinematic, and has now revealed more of Ramesses’ story, units, Royal Decrees, and more.
Total War: PHARAOH is currently scheduled to release in October 2023, and will be available on PC via Steam or the Epic Games Store. You can watch today’s new gameplay showcase on the Total War YouTube channel:
Today’s gameplay showcase is very useful. To begin with, it shows off Alpha-level landscapes and other visuals that already look gorgeous, promising something very impressive by full launch. But most importantly, the showcase manages to span nearly the full breadth of the gameplay loop.
This includes everything from production, combat and trade in the broader game, as well as the stats, abilities, and specific effects that Ramesses will offer up during battle and the campaign. They have a distinguishable style, but players still have the freedom to bend their approach with Ramesses.
The gameplay showcase reveals all of this with a helpful sense of humor and broad decision-making thoughts that keep the pace swift. However, most of the mechanics resemble a lot of the traditional gameplay from previous Total War installments, and its scope can feel rather small compared to the devs’ other titles.
Fans are already concerned about the many connections to Troy, but it remains to be seen if Total War: PHARAOH will be unable to evolve. The setting offers plenty of opportunity for fresh gameplay, and today’s showcase does include some decent variety of content. This far from launch, it’s hard to write the game off as a DLC in disguise.
