Trek to Yomi, the gorgeous samurai adventure game from developers Flying Wild Hog and Leonard Menchiari, has just announced a release date for its Nintendo Switch port. It arrives next week on January 30th, 2023. Here’s the official release date trailer from publisher Devolver Digital:
Trek to Yomi, a lush combination of arthouse and action, has breathtaking art design inspired by classic samurai cinema. However, the game has also received a lot of criticism over its combat system, often frustrating players with its fundamental mechanics. Reviews have remained positive, but there are defining flaws that some fans just can’t overlook.
The game has remained fairly successful nonetheless, and a Nintendo Switch port has been highly anticipated since it launched everywhere else last year.
The presentation of Trek to Yomi makes it ideal for mobile gaming, and although its aesthetic is clearly the highlight of its experience, the graphics aren’t necessarily demanding. So, while it would be better suited for the biggest screen possible, Trek to Yomi should provide an ideal and satisfying port for the Switch.
Publisher Devolver Digital is probably best known for some of their sense of humor, as in Cult of the Lamb, Stick it to the Stickman, or their holiday special from last month. But when they champion serious indies, they’re often supercharged with personality, such as the beloved indie drama GRIS, which was recently launched on next-gen consoles.
Trek to Yomi may have a few problems, but it’s still a worthwhile experience. The look and feel of the game are stylish and immersive. The cultural and cinematic influences are stunning, and the devs have a bright future, so hopefully Trek to Yomi’s Nintendo Switch port renews player interest and support. It’d be a thrill to see if they can elaborate in an equally meaningful way, and polish up technical issues.
